Ok.  So here goes with my next problem.

I have 14 packets of lollies.
Each packet has 9 lollies in.
How many lollies have I got altogether?

Don't forget to say how you worked it out!

I know 10 x 9 = 90 but there were 14 packets of lollies so 4 x 9 = 36 and 90 + 36 = 126.

Well done Manraj. So quick and so well answered, using a Stage 6 strategy!! I am going to give other people a chance to answer so will keep your answer a secret for now!

To work it out you first times 14 by 9 which is 126 thats how you get your answer though there is more simple ways you can work it out.

Hi Gurnoor. It is great that you wrote the answer to our maths problem, but you have not told us how you worked it out. Just saying 14 x 9 is not enough information. Have another go!

Congratulations to Manraj. You win the prize for the best answer. I am really impressed with your explanation. Come and see me about it on Monday!

Well if we change 14x9 to 14x10=140
But if we do the question as 14x9
=126.

10x9=90 Pretend the nines were tens and 4x10 is 40. 90 + 40 is 130. 130 takeaway 4 is 126. 126

The answer is 26, because 9 times 12 = 108 9 + 9 = 18. 108 + 18 = 126

Pretend the nine was a ten and fourteen x 10=140 and takeaway 14 is 126.

My strategy is rounding and compensating............
Round 9 to the nearest ten which is 10. So 14x10=140 but we rounded the 9 to the nearest ten so you have to subtract 14 from 140 which is 126.
